Health Education for 5th-8th graders November 2002
Parents, This year the family life education for the 7th and 8th graders is being taught during the health education class in the afternoon. The information is presented through handouts, videos, and class lectures. The students are graded by completed homework and tests. An example of one of the homework assignments: 8th graders were to bring in an article on HIV/AIDs from the newspaper or information from the Internet. The class then worked in groups to present the information. As students participate in the family life unit I believe it is important for the parents and adults of our students to discuss this information in the home. Sometimes it can be difficult for the young teen to ask questions of parents; likewise it can be difficult for parents to open a discussion with their young person. I encourage both students and parents alike to discuss this information. Parents=ask your student about the videos they have watched and the class assignments. Students do hear the input of parents. Sometimes even the media offers opportunities to discuss sex and family values. Those opportunities often present themselves in teachable moments-take advantage. Be open to your young teen’s opinion and thoughts. Just ask: What do you think? How do you feel about that? We can learn from our teens, likewise our teens can learn from us. It is all about communication during the changing time of adolescences. I have resources available. Please contact me at the school. My extension: 328. |
